OpenAI Takes on Google Head-on with SearchGPT

OpenAI has revealed that SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine that will go up against Google, will be released. With over 91% of the worldwide search market held by Google, OpenAI is intent on challenging its supremacy with this smart move.

In comparison with Google’s conventional “10 blue links” structure, SearchGPT is anticipated to stand out by providing a user-centric approach and synthesizing information in a more approachable way.

This new search engine puts OpenAI in direct rivalry with existing AI search tools, such as Perplexity, and it also highlights a larger trend towards search experiences improved with AI.

SearchGPT is an AI search engine that uses the robust GPT-4 model. With this change, OpenAI is now competing head-on with Google and Bing, which is a big deal in the search engine industry.

By doing more than just displaying links, SearchGPT hopes to improve the user experience by summarizing search results and offering relevant replies. Image search, several useful widgets, and support for follow-up queries are all characteristics of the search engine’s design.

At the moment, 10,000 people can use SearchGPT as a prototype. News Corp and The Atlantic are among the well-known media that have partnered with OpenAI to ensure that every content is properly licensed and credited.

With the launch of SearchGPT, some hope that search engines will take a more collaborative and instructional approach. As time goes on and technology improves, OpenAI intends to combine ChatGPT with SearchGPT to create a full-featured search engine.

Alphabet’s stock price was affected immediately after OpenAI launched SearchGPT. Alphabet stock fell 2% in the hour following the news. Investors are worried about losing market share and having to deal with tougher competition in the search engine business, which makes sense.

It uses the search term “music festivals in Boone, North Carolina in August” to show what it can do. This method quickly gives a short but useful summary of important events, with sources linked to the summary.

You can ask more questions, like “Is one of these events good for families?” and the system will answer right away with more details and links if you need them. This example shows how SearchGPT can talk to users and give them quick, right, and useful results in a way that focuses on speed and interaction.

SearchGPT will continue to be integrated and improved upon by OpenAI in the future. The prototype will be improved in areas like e-commerce and local information, according to the company’s objectives. The experience will be fine-tuned with the help of user and publisher input.

The end objective is to make ChatGPT a more powerful tool for consumers by incorporating the greatest elements of SearchGPT. By collaborating closely with publishers, OpenAI promotes a mutually beneficial connection between technology and content producers by guaranteeing high-quality material and correct credit.

CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman has been very clear about what he wants SearchGPT to do and how he sees it working. He makes it clear that the goal is not to make a copy of Google but to completely change how people find and use information online.

Altman thinks it’s great that language models are being added to search tools because it means users can have more natural, intuitive, and efficient search experiences.

Altman said in a Lex Fridman interview that the way search results are usually shown is out of date and that there is a better way to help people find and combine information.

He stated, “The thing that’s exciting to me is not that we can go build a better copy of Google search, but that maybe there’s just some much better way to help people find and act on and synthesize information.”

Altman also said that he doesn’t want to copy Google’s approach of making money from ads. He thinks that a method that is focused on the person and not affected by ads would be better.

This model makes sure that SearchGPT’s results are not affected by business interests. This makes the search experience more reliable and fair.
